Irish / literary Interest. Fob presented by Albert Prince of Wales to noted war correspondent W.H. Russell c1876. Oval Silver stamped pendant encased with silver band and 9ct gold clips with glass facing each side. Pendant reads ' H.R.H. Albert Edward , Prince of Wales, India' to one side and the Prince of Wales cypher to the other. The silver band engraved ' W.H. Russell from the Prince of Wales India 1876'. W 2.2cm, H 3.3cm inc ring, D 0.6cm.William Howard Russell (1827-1907) was a noted Irish journalist and is considered one of the 1st War Correspondents following his coverage of the Crimea war c1853-56 while working for The Times. Later in his career he covered The American Civil War, Franco-Prussian War and the laying of the Atlantic Telegraph cable and more. In 1875 Russell was made Honourable Private Secretary to HRH Albert Edward Prince of Wales during his tour of India c1875-76, and subsequently wrote a book about the Prince's tour in 1877. These commemorative silver pendants were given by the Prince of Wales to crew of his ships and staff during the tour but are usually unnamed and lacking the surround and facing.
