RMS Medina, built 1911, torpedoed and sunk in 1917, lost off Start Point, Devon An unusual concentrated clump of assorted Indian and European coins Mostly copper. It's shape and inclusion of a brass clasp suggest that this is the remains of a wooden box, 12.5cm x 8cm x 3.5cm. The Medina was built by Caird & Co of Greenock for the P&O Steam Navigation Company and was used as a Royal Yacht. She took George V and Queen Mary to the Delhi Durbar in 1911. She would have been a sumptiously appointed vessel. She was torpedoed off Start Point, Devon in April 1917 whilst returning from India en route for London. Her cargo contained the personal belongings of Lord and Lady Carmichael with their collection of art and artifacts accumulated during their time in Bengal in India, where Lord Carmichael had served as Governor. When hit, most of the passengers had already alighted in Plymouth. Six engine room crew were killed in the initial explosion, and they were the only casualties.
