R.M.S CARPATHIA: The Carpathia was a Cunard Line transatlantic passenger steamship built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson in Wallsend, Liverpool, Tyne and Wear in England in 1903. She is best known as the ship which rescued all of Titanic's survivors. This lot consists of a salvaged moulded green glass Cannington, Shaw & Company Limited beer bottle. Moulded 'CS & Co Ltd' to the underside. Approximate height 8?ins, diameter 2¾ins. It was recovered from Carpathia's wreck site on August 28, 2007, dive ten, by the Achilles rover at lat. 49º 22.069' N, long. 10º 41.686' W by an ROV basket. Accession number 07/0052. A conservation/condition report and certificate of authenticity will accompany this lot, the artefact has been professionally conserved; faint scratches with some residue to the interior.
NB The company of Cannington Shaw and Co Ltd was started in 1866 when John Cannington and John Shaw joined together in a bottle making business in St. Helens, Lancashire in England. In 1913 the firm amalgamated with Nuttall & Co. into United Glass Bottle Manufacturers.
