Royal Tribes of Wales, 19th century,
A substantial oil on canvas depicting the arms of the fifteen Noble (Royal) Tribes of North Wales and King Owain ap Gruffudd of Gwynedd, North Wales, 152cm x 182cm
Provenance: The Estate of Lord Kenyon, Gredington.
Footnote: These shields date back to Nobles from both the pre and post Norman invasion of 1066. The nobles all came from what were the old principality of Wales; Anglesey, Caernarvonshire, Merionethshire, Denbighshire and Flintshire. The arms depicted are presumably taken from 'The Royal Tribes of Wales' by Philip Yorke of Erddig (1743-1804) published in 1799. The Fifteen arms comprise of; I.HWFA ap CYNDDELW, II. LLYWARCH ap BRAN, III. GWEIRYDD ap RHYS GOCH, IV.CILMIN TROED-DDU, V.COLLWYN ap TANGNO, VI.NEFYDD HARDD, VII. MAELOG CRWM, VIII. MARCHUDD ap CYNAN, IX. HEDD MOLWYNOG, X. BRAINT HIR, XI.MARCHWEITHIAN, XII. EDWIN of TEGAINGL, XIII. EDNOWAIN BENDEW, XIV. EUNYDD of GWERNGWY and XV. EDNOWAIN ap BRADWEN. F. A painted set of fifteen arms can be seen in nearby Erddig, located in the 'Tribes Room', above the fireplace.
The canvas shows various small holes, tears and depressions to the surface (see photos). The paint surface shows crazing throughout and areas of fading, wear and paint loss. The left hand capping piece of the frame is unattached but present.
