Clare WHITE (1903-1997) In the Shade of the Trees, Barbados Watercolour, signed, 36 x 50cm. St Ives artist Clare White visited her sister, who lived in Barbados, several times in the 1960s and painted some of her most celebrated works here. The island's luxuriant sunlight, beautiful natural environment and friendly people feature in her paintings. This piece portrays a simple snatch of Caribbean village life with her characteristic good humour, love of colour, masterful draughtsmanship and skillful animation of figures.
