A GEORGE III SILVER SNUFF BOX
maker's mark only, probably by Alexander Gardner of Edinburgh, c.1815, rectangular, with engine-turned decoration and a moulded foliate thumbpiece, the cover with an engraved central cartouche, the interior gilded and with a presentation inscription. 8.2cm wide, 4.6 troy ounces
Presentation inscription: Presented by a few Friends in / acknowledgement of his skill as an / agriculturalist and his worth as a Man
Engraving to the cover worn and illegible, a slight split has formed on the side with the hinge, looks to be where two smaller pieces of metal have been joined in the construction of the box rather than through damage, one back corner slightly dented, the cover opens and closes tightly, the gilding bright, hallmark clear.
