Gold Mourning Ring. Circa 17th century CE. 22mm, 2.53 grams. A plain gold ring with a raised central rib, engraved around the inside of the band with the verse, 'Animae Vita Mors' in italic Latin script. Translated, ‘The Life of the Spirit is Death'. Makers mark W within a square. Ref:Oman (1974, 41) notes that italic lettering on this type of ring generally replaced Roman capitals in the second quarter of the 17th century - and were ubiquitous for late 17th century and 18th century rings. Recorded on the PAS database: OXON-31F94D.
