Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Cubist Windows, Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut Watercolour, signed, 38 x 51cm. St Ives artist Clare White was a huge admirer of the architect Le Corbusier’s work, and painted several watercolours of his modernist buildings, inspired by his bold use of colour and shape. In this 1960s scene, tourists gaze at the grid of square windows in the Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp, built in 1954. Her paintings are both attractive artwork and historical document.
