MONKEY WITH MONAKLE INKWELL BOTTLE. Blobby. Anthropomorphic monkey head wearing a smoking hat & gilded monocle. Olive green glaze, the mouth serving as the font. A genre of images featuring monkeys in human guise appeared first in the 1600s in the low countries. Called singeries, from the French for monkey trick - as in monkeying about. Dates from the late 19th century revival. Probably made in Belgium or by a faience factory in St Clements area of France. Only about four are known some naturalistically painted or more monochrome as with this example. Very rare.
