A large nautical mermaid vase hand carved in wood, signed J Vainaukas and dated 1941. Of amphora form, hewn from a single section of tree trunk, the exterior profusely decorated in high relief depicting a continuous nautical scene incorporating three equidistant mermaids swimming beneath sea creatures amongst waves. Inscribed ‘J Vainaukas (Lithuanian refugee, England 1941)’ to the shoulder of the body. 78.5 cm height. Condition report: Some surface wear and naturally occurring splits to wood with age.
