AN 1897 PATTERN ROYAL ENGINEERS SWORD AND SCABBARD.
With an 84cm straight, pointed and partially fullerd blade etched with VR beneath a crown and flaming grenade amongst scrolls, the other side with owners initials and Royal Engineers winged bolts, the blade marked for Hodgson and Son, Woolwich (trading between 1887 and 1901), the blade further marked with crowned head and knight's helm suggesting the blade was made by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum et Cie (1883-1918). The broad steel guard with pierced scrolling foliage and VR beneath a crown, with turned over inner edge, the fish skin grip wire bound and with a domed oval pommel, In a steel scabbard with twin ring suspension, 102cm overall.
