Grand piano by Robert and Matthew Stodart, London, 1790.

Details:

The case of mahogany with holly stringing and rosewood crossbanding, the fascia board and cheeks veneered with satinwood, holly and stained fruitwood stringing with kingwood crossbanding.

New hardwood wrest plank insert fitted and original top veneer returned in 2008.

New set of hitch pins.

The five-octave keyboard, FF to f3, with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals.

English grand action, two pedals controlling una corda and damper-lift, with music desk, on trestle stand.

Inscribed on a boxwood plaque ‘Robertus and Matthew Stodart Londini fecerunt 1790 Wardour Street Soho’

‘RUDD &CO 42 Union Street, W.1’ ink stamped on the key blocks.

Length 88", 223.5cm, width 38", 96.5cm.

Restored in 2008/2009 by Lucy Coad, Calvin Talbot and Ben Marks and sold with their report on the restoration

Condition:

The new wrest plank insert in 2009 still providing a structurally sound instrument.

Hitch plank (re-glued in 2008) is firmly in place.

Some new wrest pins fitted of the original style.

Good playing order.

Crack in lid professionally repaired.

Piano presently a whole tone below concert pitch – although the re-stringing in 2009 has been calculated for a pitch of A415hz. Tuning pins stable in the plank.

Many original features, components and materials.

Observations noted in the condition report are based on obvious signs to the naked eye from an experienced restorer.
