BAYERN. Regiments Ehrenkreuz mit Gefechtsspange des Königlich Bayerisches Schwere-Reiter-Regiment, „Prinz Karl von Bayern“ Nr. 1, um 1900; The Regiment was established on 16 July 1814 as a Garde du Corps to the King of Bavaria and given the title ‘Prince Charles of Bavaria’s’ on 26 April 1848. It fought in the Napoleonic Wars, with Austria against Prussia in 1866 and against France in 1870-71.

In World War I, the Regiment fought in Lorraine and made a cavalry charge at Gondrexon. It then moved to Neuf-Berquin, Lys, Ypres and into reserve at Metz. In April 1915 it moved to the Eastern Front and fought in Lithuania and Courland and later in Galicia and Romania. In March 1918, it moved on Kiev, Odessa and the Crimea. At the end of the war it was in eastern Ukraine from where it returned to Bavaria in January 1919, there to be demobilised and disbanded.
