NEWFOUNDLAND - UNDERPAID STAMPED MAIL EX G.B. WITH HANDSTRUCK "6d" OR "d2" MARKS, ETC.; 7 Sept. 1871 env. (slight dusting) to St. Johns with only a GB 3d Rose-red tied by fine "WATERFORD" duplex and so 3d underpaid (for the 6d base rate) and having a partly fine boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID" mark with a fine h.s. "6d" (both of Queenstown?; the 6d changed to "18[c]" blue crayon on delivery). Plus 28 Apr. 1876 env. (slight wear) from London to Blackhead with only a GB 2½d Rosy-mauve for the 3d rate (not yet reduced to the UPU rate) and so with partly fine red boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID" and v. fine h.s. "d2" (Lpool?; changed to "7[c]" in blue crayon on delivery). Good pair showing the challenges of the special Newfoundland rates before and after entry into the UPU.
