NEWFOUNDLAND - UNDER-FRANKED COVERS TO G.B. WITH ST. JOHNS "DEFICIENT..." MARK & H.S. "4", ETC.; Dec. 1874 env. (small tear at top clear of stamp & marks) from St. Johns to Poole "Pr. Scandinavian" but overweight and franked with only a 6c Rose tied by cork/cds and so with small fine St. Johns "DEFICIENT[3] POSTAGE[1½]/FINE-----" mark struck neatly beside a v. fine St. Johns Handstruck "4" (with blue crayon "½" added) for the claim on GB, so charged "6[d]" on delivery. Plus unusual 16 Feb. 1897 env. (some creasing) from St. Johns to Scotland endorsed "Stamps Only" (i.e. printed matter!) and franked only for the 2c rate with ½c Black pairs back and front; with a "T" In circle mark and mainly v. fine Liverpool h.s. "8" (very late usage of a mark introduced in 1840!) on the front.
