A large souvenir fan for the “Andenken an das Internationale Port-Rotunde Wein 1894”, the monture of wood painted gold, the double leaf of paper printed on the recto with a scene of a small town with a central fountain, the streets bustling with people, the shops named, a large attribution to “Oskar Marmorek, Architect” (1863 – 1909) to the right, the name “Zeuner” to the bottom left, the verso is plain, guard approx.34cm.
Marmorek worked at the Paris Exhibition in 1889 and thereafter became a sought-after exhibition architect. The following is further information from FCI member Margaretha Mazura: This is a souvenir fan of the "International village 1894" (Andenken an das Internationale Dorf - Rotunde Wien 1894). This was a medieval reconstruction of a village, conceived by architect Marmorek (he specialised in exhibition architecture) within the "Internationale Ausstellung für Volksernährung, Armeeverpflegung, Rettungswesen und Verkehrsmittel in Wien" (International exhibition for public nutrition, army catering, rescue services and means of transport in Vienna). The products of the exhibitors are reflected on the reverse which served as advertising for them, with products as diverse as cocoa, fireworks, pianos and bras. The exhibition took place at the same venue as the World Fair 1973. The fan was printed by "lithographical print A. Reisser, Wien" (Vienna). Left is the remark "gesetzl. geschützt" and right in French "DEPOSE, both meaning protected by law claiming the copyright
The upper guard has a large split but it is holding well. Large sections of the leaf are backed with restoration paper, presumably supporting fold splits but this is not obvious from the recto, the fan feels sound.
