1915 The Soldier's Own Diary owned by Lieutenant John Roland Adams 6th Bn Essex Regt who was wounded at Gallipoli. All entries made in pencil. First entry states Gazetted in December 3 1914, Second Lieutenant in 1/6th Battn Essex Regt, Norman's old Regiment. Joined for duty at Costessey, Norfolk on December 18. While much of the diary has no entries the more notable are:
24 Jul Leave St Albans 1.45.
25 Jul Leave Devonport.
26-31 On way to Malta.
6 Aug Steam for Mudros Bay.
9 Aug Watch bombardment of Achi Baba by monitors.
10 Aug Leave Imbros for Gallipoli.
11 Aug Arrived Gallipoli. Land on "B" Beach near Salt Lake.
13 Aug Advance, snipers and shrapnel, shrapnel, snipers, dead men, all blood.
14 Aug (but possibly a continuation of 13th) shrapnel all over me, blood.
15-18 Aug (completed on 19 Aug) On board Hospital Ship Clan Macgillivray.
19 Aug Come off hospital ship. My mind a blank until now. Taken to Ascamia.
20 Aug On board SS Ascamia. Leave Mudros Bay in evening. Am very bad with my nerves.
23 Aug Arrived at Malta. Still bad, can't sleep without horrible dreams.
27 Aug Bullied by a Colonel of R.A.M.C. Feel rotten, also very annoyed.
5 Sep Embarked hospital ship for England.
With copied LG and SWB roll, commissioned late Cadet Officer, Cranleigh School Contingent, Junior Division OTC in 6th Bn Essex Regt 3/12/14, discharged as Lieut late 1918 and issued Silver War Badge No B13912, home address in Putney. A rare personal record of an officer's experience from the landings and action at Suvla Bay. (R)
