1944 Top Pop King George VI silver Threepence coin graded MS 66 by NGC (S 4085, ESC 2158). Obverse:  left-facing bare-headed portrait of George VI by Humphrey Paget with 'GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX'. Reverse: shield with St George cross over a Tudor rose, dividing the year (1944) with 'FID: DEF: IND: IMP' above and 'THREE · PENCE' by George Kruger Gray. Edge: plain. Diameter: 16mm. Mintage: 2,005,500. Grade: MS 66 - joint highest graded example. Sealed in its NGC holder (#6867540-007). Silver Threepences minted between 1942 and 1944 were all shipped to the British West Indies for Colonial use. This example is one of two examples graded MS 66 by NGC as joint top of the population. Circulating silver Threepences were phased out in favour of their 12-sided nickel-brass counterparts, with coins struck with a 1945 date melted down.
