Naval General Service Medal 1848 with clasp 'Phoebe 28 March 1814' and correctly named (John Clark.) Confirmed to roll (G.H No 9577) ( Capt Afterguard Phoebe). Bar for the capture of the American 32-gun frigate Essex by HM Ships Phoebe, 30 guns (Capt James Hillyar) off Valparaiso harbour, Chile. 31 bars to ship. Research reveals he is also shown on the roll for the Java clasp as "not found", he joined the Phoebe after this action. Ships books for HMS Phoebe for the period 1/11/1814 - 31/8/1815 show his Ships book number as '1284', joined the ship 16th Oct 1812 from the HMS Salvador aged 37 (born c1775) His birth place appears to be New Castle. His service record from ADM/29 notes that he was Wounded in the Head aboard 'Salsette' on board which ship he served from 11th April 1809 to 15th January 1813, the Salsette had a very adventurous time while John was aboard, even giving Lord Byron a lift ! Superb and Rare medal, vended by decent. Note: 31 bars issued, believed 12 known, including examples in The National Maritime Museum, and the Royal Naval Museum. Original ribbon can be found inside an unusual homemade protective cloth cover.
