QUINTILIANUS (Marcus Fabius)
De institutione oratoria libri XII ... argumentisque doctissimi viri Petri Gallandielucidati. Eiusdem Declamationum liber..
Paris: ex officina Michaelis Vascosani, 1542.
Both titles within woodcut architectural borders, the second also with large device of a printing press; historiated and floriated initials in several sizes.
2 parts in one vol. Folio. [6leaves], 198, [16/ff., 50, 58ff. 17th/18th century vellum over paste-boards, spine gilt in six compartments, two with red morocco labels. 340mm x230mm.
The second edition of Pierre Galland's version of Quintilian and the first of many to be published by Vascosan. Galland's first edition, published by Gervais Chevallon who was only active for two years, is very rare. Adams lists another issue of Vascosan's edition with "apud Audenum Parvum" following the printer's name. Galland (1510-59) was a central figure in the academic and literary circles of Paris. He held the chair of Latin rhetoric at the University of Paris and was also Rector there. His edition of Quintilian has had a permanent influence and modern editors still follow the text divisions that he established.
