Rare George III silver pair cased rack lever pocket watch, by Litherland, Liverpool, the case hallmarked Chester 1802, plain outer case, white enamelled dial with 15 second subsidiary dial, the back plate signed and numbered 2234, 65mm diameter
NB: See Robert Kemp 'The Englishman's Watch' published 1979. From the author's collection, the movement is numbered 2234. Peter Litherland took out a patent for this type of escapement in 1792. The escape wheel made four revolutions a minute, hence we see the second hand revolving on the subsidiary every 15 seconds.
