PLATE 12 - BJ, STATE 2 - RARE USE OF "PL" MARK AS SOLE CANCEL ON EARLY REG. COVER - Sep. 1841 reg. E to Pontefract with three margin 1d red tied solely by multiple strikes of the oval "PL" mark applied at Manchester on late mail, '1/-' reg. fee paid in cash and MANCHESTER cds (2) on the flap; believed to be the only example of such used as a cancel. Also Jan./Feb. 1846 pair of ELs paid with 1d red or in cash with the same "PL" mark applied normally, each with MANCHESTER and BOLTON cds on front or back. Very fine trio.
