Provenance note: Painted by the artist as a gift for the present owner's family thence by direct descent sold with a photograph of the artist painting the picture, and accompanying letter While originally from England, Marshall Hutson spent most of his prolific career in Cork, Ireland, teaching at the Crawford School of Art from 1930 until his retirement in 1966. In addition to completing several public commissions for his adopted home country of Ireland, including church murals, designs for the Irish Ballet company, and sculptural project for Cork's library and harbour, he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy on a regular basis. Hutson's works are in the collection of the Crawford Art Gallery, who held a retrospective exhibition of his career in 2004. A similar harvest scene with figures was sold at James Adam & Bonhams, Important Irish Art, 7 December 2005, lot 108.
