Part I: Later spine and endpapers, worn spine side edges to original leather of boards, all corners bumped, shelf wear throughout, 2.5cm tear to title page between M and E of JAMES, staining to right side of title page (extensive to blank page verso), darkening to page edges throughout (pp65/66, pp427/428 and appendix particularly), some light foxing, possible small burn hole p637 with consequent staining to neighbouring pages.

Part II: Later spine and endpapers, worn spine side edges to original leather of boards, all corners bumped, shelf wear throughout, staining to frontispiece and blank page verso, staining to title page and blank page verso, darkening to page edges throughout, some light foxing throughout, heavier foxing to odd pages.

Part III: All cords exposed at cover joints, top cord broken at rear cover joint, all corners bumped, shelf wear throughout, detached FFEP, staining to frontispiece and blank page verso, staining to title page and blank page verso (and somewhat on to next page), darkening to page edges throughout, some light foxing throughout, heavier foxing to odd pages.
