TORONTO - OCTUPLE RATE SHIP LETTER TO THE "CANADA COMPANY" (G.B.) VIA THE U.S.; 9 Apr. 1840 EL (with reference to enclosed company accounts) from "CITY of TORONTO/U.C" (fine cds on the front) to London endorsed "Pr Packet Ship - via New York" (the SS Liverpool had been sold off in 1839 so this may suggest despatch by whatever steamer was next heading for Liverpool) to the Canada Co. (set up to encourage British emigration) endorsed "3 Oz" (twice; in red in Canada & in black in G.B.) & "paid no. 39" (accountancy number) with v. fine Toronto "PAID" on the front & red ms "7/7 + 325" (7/7 = thirteen times inland Canadian rate + thirteen times internal US rate - no mention of Freight Money) and so charged "5/4" (octuple 8d Ship Letter rate) on arrival, with a partial "LIVERPOOL/SHIP LETTER" on the flap. Very unusual item.
