ZDISLAW RUSZKOWSKI (1907-1991) In the Cafe, Rue Jacob, Paris, signed, oil on canvas, unframed, 20 x 30 in

The artist is depicted as one of the seated figures at the front of the composition.

Literature: Ruskowski.A catalogue Raisonne by Michael Simonow, no.700, p316 .

'At he end of June (1986) Ruszkowski and I visited Paris for a few days. In spite of his failing eyesight and the Extreme heat we were able to visit not only his studio in Rue Daguerre but many of his pre-war haunts including the Cafe le Dome and most of the important art galleries and museums. We stayed at a small hotel in the Rue de Seine on the left bank called La Louisiane. We later found out that past residents included Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Juliette Greco, and Salvador Dali. After dinner we would sit in a small cafe just round the corner in Rue Jacob until the early hours, listening to the street musicians and watching the continual stream of passers-by. This painting shows us in the cafe late at night and I remember Ruszkowski considering the subject for a painting'' Michael Simonov, op cit, p 316.
