Star Lot: Lydia de Burgh (1923-2007). An original Lydia de Burgh oil on canvas painting. Features an impressionistic landscape of clusters of houses nestled beside a gently flowing river. The scene is brought to life through soft, blended brushstrokes that enhance the dreamy, atmospheric quality. Signed lower left. De Burgh's work has been offered multiple times at auction with similar works fetching into the early hundreds at auction.

Lydia de Burgh, painter in oil and watercolour, notable for her portraits, born in London. As a child she was taught by Ruth Stalder, of Switzerland. Later in London she studied privately with Sonia Mervyn the portrait painter, 1948–51, more teaching coming from Byam Shaw School of Art, 1952, and Edward Wesson. She was elected Hon. RUA, 1984, being a member of Chelsea Art Society, SWLA, Ulster Watercolour Society and the Ulster Society of Women Artists. Also exhibited at RP, RBA and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Solo shows included Ulster Office, London, 1956. Most of de Burgh’s work was commissioned. She had a contract with Rowland Ward Gallery in London and Nairobi from 1960–9 to paint African wildlife. Painted HM The Queen and other members of the royal family from personal sittings.
