Two iconic medals commemorating the granting of independence to India in 1947 and the partition of the country to form the new state of Pakistan:
a. The Indian Independence Medal was instituted by King George VI in 1950 to commemorate the Independence of India on August 15, 1947. The Medal was awarded to members of the Indian armed forces and British personnel who served during and after the Independence ceremonies. This example named to: 201 Swpr Puran Singh, 2-8 G R.
b. The Pakistan Medal  (Tamgha-e-Pakistan) was instituted by King George VI in 1949 to commemorate creation of the independent Dominion of Pakistan on 14 August 1947. Most recipients were members of the armed forces of Pakistan, including attached British personnel. This example is named to: 180369 S/GD Allah
Ditta PAOC. Whilst perhaps not greatly valued, these medals nevertheless commemorate one of the most momentous episodes of 20th Century British history.
