TWO FIRST WORLD WAR POSSIBLE CASUALTY PAIRS TO A FATHER AND SON. A Great War Pair named to 2576 DVR W.H. Blatchford 2. PNR BN AIF. And a similar pair named to 20542 Pte L.W. Blatchford Dorset R. William Henry Blatchford attested for the Australian Imperial Force on the 25th May 1915, at the time he was a 44 year old labourer from Bodmin in Cornwall. His wife's address being in Crediton, Devon. Medical reports suggest a hernia for which he declined treatment, and also suggest he returned to Australia in September 1919, a note in the Australian archives gives a date of death of the 9th of September 1921, quite possibly from the untreated restricted hernia aggravated by service in the War. (He will not have been entitled to a Memorial Plaque). Leslie William Blatchford was born in 1899, the son of William Henry Blatchford, resident of 11 Exeter Road in Crediton. He served with the 6th Battalion, and was killed in action on the 27th August 1918. The Commonwealth War Graves state his Father as deceased (who also fell), he is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois memorial, he was 19 years old. The names of both are included on the Crediton Parish Church roll of honour and the Crediton Town memorial. Mounted for display with unnamed replica Memorial plaques and copied research including images of memorials.
