A Blue John urn, 19th century, the shaped domed top, above inverted egg shape body, and stepped circular base, 20cm high
The piece shows natural fractures throughout. It is possible that some of these may have extended over time with the potential to form hairline cracks. There is a natural pit approximately 3mm diameter to the shoulder, and the piece shows the odd further smaller pit. There is some kind of dowelled or threaded join between the body and the foot. It is not clear if this is the way the piece was made, or if it is a later repair, however if the urn was made as two pieces, we would expect the foot to be drilled to accommodate a threaded bolt. There is some rotational movement in the joint, and evidence of some kind of filler around the joint. There are two small pits to the foot rim.
