A Victorian silver-mounted cut glass claret jug, the body with graduated, sloping festoon-type curving cuts and silver-mounted star cut foot, the shoulder of the neck with rubbed London hallmarks for 1891 and 'C.E' maker's mark for Charles Edwards, the foot mount and mount above the foot with similar hallmarks, the handle with stylised foliate pattern, the neck, collar and lid with embossed scrolling, swag, floral and foliate designs, the spout with goat's head beneath, the silver foot mount engraved 'PRESENTED TO GEORGE COLES Esq. by the Directors of Stamford Hill Cinema Ltd as a mark of esteem and appreciation of valuable services rendered as Architect Dec. 26th 1925', 31cm high.
FOOTNOTE: George Coles (1884–1963) was a notable English architect, best known for his designs for Art Deco cinemas in the 1920s and 1930s. He was also involved in the design of the People's Palace (1936), that later became part of Queen Mary College, University of London, and he designed the British Home Stores (now Primark) in Rye Lane, Peckham, London. The highly geometric Stamford Hill Cinema was opened on 26th December 1925 (the date this claret jug was presented) as an independently operated cinema. Renamed The Super Cinema in 1947, it became the first ten pin bowling alley to open in Britain, opening on 20th January 1960. When the fad for bowling passed, the cinema was demolished in the early 1960s.
Condition: Silver tarnished and with wear through use and polishing over time. No visible splits, losses or repairs. The edges of many of the curving cut glass panels, primarily on one side of the body, but also elsewhere in patches, are nibbled. The edges of the stepped shoulders of the glass body are similarly nibbled in places.

IMPORTANT
When you request your lot(s) to be packed and shipped, you understand and agree that you are committing to pay for packing and shipping because, in order for us to give you an accurate cost, we need to pack the lot(s) to ascertain the final weight and size. By doing that, we have already incurred cost by spending time and using materials to pack your lot(s). Therefore this charge must be paid, even if you later decide to collect your lot.
INSURANCE
The above quotes do not include insurance. If you require insurance, please request this when you request your lots to be packed and shipped. We can only know the cost of insurance after the hammer falls as it is only then that we will know the value to be insured.

The estimates above are for this lot only. If you buy multiple lots from this auction, they can be combined where possible into one or more packages - size, shape and weight permitting. For these packages containing multiple lots, you will receive a discount of 17.5% of the total of the applicable quotes listed for those lots.
Please note that this packing and shipping service is undertaken entirely at the buyer’s risk. Whilst we take the utmost care to pack items as well as we can, we cannot be held responsible for any damage to, or loss of, items packed and sent to you.
