BARBADOS/CAPE VERDE ISLANDS - LETTER FROM SAILOR WHO LOST EVERYTHING TO FRENCH FRIGATES; 19 Jan. 1813 (error for 1814?) EL (worn folds and some reinforcing) from "Barbadoes" to London with fine red "FALMOUTH" (PACKET LETTER removed type) on the front and charged "2/-"; redirected locally and privately. The letter (typed transcript) gives the news of the writer and 4 ships having been taken by the french frigates La Nymph and Meduze off the Cape Verde Islands; they sank his ship (the 'Sketchly') and two of the others letting the four crews (without anything of value) leave in the 'Prince George'. The writer is now en route to "the Bay of Honduras as mate of a new Ship". Remarkable story. Cross Reference: BARBADOS, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, MILITARY - NAPOLEONIC WAR, CORNWALL
