Confederate States: Scrip certificate for $[10,000], issued by the National Safe Deposit Company Limited in London on behalf of the Bondholders' Trustees, 188[7], #5492, black. Following the end of the Civil War the large number of English bondholders tried to get the US Government to accept liability for the bonds which of course they did not. The holding of some 75,000 bonds were sold in one lot by Sothebys in 1987! GVF
