Mid-late 20th century African strung bead necklaces of porcupine quills, coloured beads, shells, leather and string made and worn by the indigenous women of the Mwino Valley, Kenya, with the more elaborate brightly coloured examples designed for married girls/women, whilst the natural, plainer necklaces were worn by pre-pubescent young girls (1 bag) Provenance: from a collection of items gifted to the Revered Canon Philip Price (British, 1925-2010) from the Pokot and Tamkal tribal communicates as a mark of respect and thanks for his ministry and good works. The majority are utilitarian or decorative items used by the indigenous people with a selection made by schoolchildren from the villages of the Mwino Valley. See a copy of the document signed and sealed by Leonard Mombassa, née Beecher, Archbishop of the Province of East Africa, from 1960 to 1970, recording the gift of the items to Price. Note: Proceeds from the sale will go directly to the people of the Mwino Valley, contributing to relief efforts in response to recent devastating floods.
