* * A Chinese carved clair du lune glazed incense box and cover, by Li Yucheng, Jingdezhen, 1820-1870, of elongated octagonal form, the cover with a cockerel and foliage, the sides with blind fret centred by ‘wan’ motifs, the interior with turquoise glaze, carved seal script mark ‘ Li Yucheng zuo’ to base, 9.5cm wide

Provenance: Spink & Son Ltd, London, 5th October, 1987.

Li Yucheng is known as a master of porcelain carving, active during the reigns of Daoguang to Tongzhi.
Cf. a yellow glazed brushpot by Li Yucheng sold by Christie’s, Hong Kong, The Pavilion Sale - Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Including the Quek Kiok Lee Collection, 9 October 2019, lot 53, bearing a similar seal mark.

Lid in good order, base with two tiny nicks in the porcelain, one of the inside of the rim, the other on the edge of the body one end, otherwise small scattered firing marks but no other faults noted.
