Boxell, Brighton a French late-Victorian Anglaise brass carriage clock the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a gong with a repeat of the last hour on demand, the backplate engraved with the name of the retailer Boxell, Brighton and numbered 1479 the hand setting arrow in the form used by Couillet Freres, carriage clock movement makers at Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, the decorative cream enamel dial having black Arabic numerals in individual roundels and blued-steel decorative hands, the Anglaise case with matching handle, height 18.5cm/16cm, handle up/down. Note: Thomas Boxell, born 1823, was apprentice to a local watchmaker and at the age of twenty-two was running his own business as at 55/56 Albion Street, Brighton. In 1856 he re-located his business to The Observatory, 40 King's Road, Brighton and the 1859 Post Office Directory of Sussex records Thomas Boxell as a ''watchmaker & jeweller'' at 43 King's Road, Brighton. He was not only a fine maker but retailed clocks and watches made by some of the finest makers of the period including Thomas Cole and carriage clocks from Drocourt of Paris.
