The reverse bears a printed label (dated 22/11/1923) which states .. 'purchased by Lowbridge Bright at Lord Dulcie's Sale. It once belonged to Speaker Lenthall'.
William Lenthall (1591-1662) was Speaker of the House of Commons for almost twenty years both before and after the execution of King Charles 1. He had an extensive collection of paintings, many of which he kept in his two chief residences Burford Priory and Besselsleigh Manor, Oxfordshire.
