§ Kate NICHOLSON (1929-2019) Stone Flower, 1960  Oil on paper, signed, titled and dated April 1960 to verso, 58 x 34cm, framed 76 x 52cm Kate Nicholson and her mother, Winifred Nicholson, often travelled and painted together, this painting was created during their first trip to Greece in April 1960, a thoroughly successful visit that encouraged multiple further excursions throughout the '60s and early '70s. Winifred's influence on her daughter's work is clear in this beautiful and light, abstracted still-life. To the back of the piece is a torn address label for Helen Sutherland at Cockley Moor, Cumbria - Sutherland was one of her generation's most prominent and highly regarded Modern British Art patrons and collectors, included in her exceptional collection are numerous works by Ben and Winifred Nicholson. Sutherland first met the Nicholsons in 1925, this meeting proved to be a pivotal and hugely influential moment in her career - Edward Hodgkin wrote that it took 'courage as well as taste' to buy these works by 'young artists who were known to a few and admired by even fewer'. Inscribed to the back of the work in the hand of Ben Nicholson "Charles L.* - could you please send this ptg by Kate to her - Kate Nicholson, 4 Porthgwidden Studios, St Ives, Cornwall". *likely to be Swiss gallerist Charles Leinhard with whom Nicholson was showing at the time. Exhibited - Belgrave Gallery, St Ives (label verso)
