A rare mid-18th century pewter sponge box, circa 1750

Of typical spherical form, formed in two parts, the lid with regular pierced holes (for ventilation to dry the sponge) and engraved with stylized flowerheads and foliage, on a short, spreading, circular foot, apparently unmarked, height 9.3cm, diameter 8.8cm

Numerous mid-18th century spherical sponge and accompanying soap boxes are recorded in gold, silver-gilt and silver, and sometimes in brass, but rarely in pewter
