Robert Taylor Pritchett (British, 1828-1907) The testing of 'Big Will' at Shoeburyness signed and dated 1864 watercolour and pencil drawing 23 x 36cm. 'Big Will' was a gun designed by engineer and industrialist Sir William Armstrong. A '600-pounder', the gun was capable of firing objects weighing 600lbs, and the gun itself weighed 22.5 tons. The London Illustrated News reported on the start of the gun trials at Shoeburyness in 1863, and these trials are what Pritchett has depicted here. His drawing was later reproduced and circulated as an engraving.
