Sirius. 1838 (June 30) Entire to London endorsed "P. Sirius" with red London c.d.s (July 18) and "SHIP LETTER / PLYMOUTH" on reverse, carried on the second and final voyage of the "Sirius". Also a Proof by the "Bureau of Engraving & Printing" showing the arrival of the Sirius, and letters of 1837 and 1843 from the St. George Steam Packet Co., the final item a printed letter about dissolving the company. The "Sirius" was built for the St. George Steam Packet Co but chartered to the British & American Steam Navigation Co in 1838, becoming the first ship to cross the Atlantic entirely under steam, beating the "Great Western" by several hours.
