2nd-EARLIEST 'SYDNEY VIEWS' 3d GREEN COVER - TO G.B. WITH SYDNEY DOTTED OVAL CANCELS; Attractive 24 Jan. 1850 mourning env. (top flap lost) from Sydney to "Stowe, Weedon Royal" with Sydney Views 3d Green (4 close to wide margins) tied by a relatively light Sydney dotted oval cancellation; endorsed "Per [Ship] Agricola" with a mainly fine red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/*SYDNEY*" d.s. on the front beside the London "8[d]" manuscript ingoing Ship Letter charge. The 'Agricola' arrived ad Deal on 28 May and there is a fine red 29 May London transit backstamp. A remarkably early Australian usage of a Mourning envelope; Palmer (2013) only records one earlier overseas Sydney Views cover [see the previous lot above] but we have also recorded one 12 Jan. 1850 3d cover to G.B. Important N.S.W. Exhibition Item. [With 1995 Holcombe cert. of genuineness.]
