A JAMES I/CHARLES I OAK AND ELM LAUDIAN CREDENCE TABLE, ENGLISH, LONDON/HOME COUNTIES, CIRCA 16201630. The eight- sided folding top with original tenoned hinges above a five - sided frame, the upper friezes with applied walnut split balusters, having a single drawer to the centre frieze all above deep channel moulded arcades, joined by ball and baluster turned elm legs with applied Walnut split balusters, with matching Elm pendant drops between the side arcades. All above the original twin lower shelf board, retaining original sliding rear elm leg, used as the top support, the table retaining contrasting dark colour decoration throughout. 91cm wide 81cm high Footnote - The Laudian style was confined to a relatively short time period in England between 1615 to 1645. Named after Archbishop William Laud, (Bishop of London, 1628 33, Archbishop of Canterbury 1633-40, d. 1645). From designs inspired by Inigo Jones after his studies of Palladian architecture in Italy whilst surveyor of James Is Royal Works.
