Hyman SEGAL (1914-2004) Two works Masai Elder, mixed media drawing, signed and inscribed, 22 x 18.5cm and Kikutu Elder, pastel, signed, 24 x 16.5cm (2) Segal first made his name in St Ives with an exhibition of his African portraits, one of which was selected for STISA’s 1947 tour there, but this was rejected by the South African Gallery as inappropriate. Segal used his art to fight apartheid for the rest of his career. These two Kenyan works are clearly of the same man. The drawing is inscribed bottom left ‘ “Giku Kuil” - Ceremony at Kajiado, Sept 3/43’ and then, on the right, ‘Masai Elder’. However, the pastel on the right is called ‘Kikuyu Elder’. Kikuyu is some 40 miles from Kajiado. The drawing is likely to be correct.
