RARE RETALIATORY RATE COVER FROM FRANCE ("PD") VIA G.B. TO NEW ORLEANS; 25 June 1848 EL (minor wear) from "NANTES" (fine 2-ring cds on front) to N. Orleans with red boxed "PD" but transiting Liverpool (octagon d.s.) on 28 June and so treated as an unpaid letter from G.B. by the U.S. P.O. and so - in spite of London "PAID" c.d.s. - with superb red Boston "34" arrival charge (full inland + Transatlantic rates) with "BOSTON/SHIP" cds (12 July; carried on the Cunard SS Niagara) alongside.
