18th Century French School. A Set of Eight Drawings "Traite de Fortifications", after the designs of Sebastien Le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban, Blaise Francois de Pagan and Antoine Deville, Watercolour and ink, Inscribed verso, unframed 14.75" x 10" (37.5 x 25.4cm) (8). Notes: Sebastien Le Prestre was an engineer who served Louis XIV for more than fifty years, making a name for himself through plans to build citadels and strongholds. The designs are drawn from an unpublished treatise, probably used as an instruction manual at a French military school such as La Fleche.
