† Robert Gibbings (1889 - 1958), Corals reefs of Bermuda, signed 'Gibbings'(lower right), pencil and gouache on xylonite, 30 x 24.5 cm, framed and glazed 41 x 35 cm Labelled verso, 'Robert Gibbings: Original drawing made 20 feet under the sea on the coral reefs of Bermuda, 1937' Robert Gibbings, was a founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers and ran the Golden Cockerel Press until 1933. Gibbings illustrated a number of books on travel and natural history, and he became the first man to draw underwater using pencil and panels of xylonite during an expedition to Bermuda. Some of these illustrations were later used as wood engravings for 'Blue Angels and Whales' published in 1938.
