Marie Rose, The Solent, 1545 A coil of tarred rope and wooden wedge Approximately 120cm in length, 5cm in diameter. Gifted to Richard Larn, who was instrumental in the raising of the ship, one of Britain’s most valued maritime artifacts, and King Henry VIII’s flagship. After bringing the piece to surface, Margaret Rule, the project’s archaeological director, allowed Larn the piece as a thank you for his efforts and ingenuity when attempting to raise the ship. More can be read on Richard's involvement here: www.insidehook.com/culture/mary-rose-king-henry-viii-flagship On 19th July 1545, while Henry VIII watched, the Mary Rose sank. She was part of an English fleet trying to stop the French ships landing on the Isle of Wight, but sank before firing a single shot. Vastly overcrowded, around 700 of her crew, including the captain, Sir George Carew, drowned, and only about 30 men were rescued.
