BELFAST TITANIC HARLAND & WOLFF COLLECTION.
Charlotte E. Irwin (nee Brennan) was 20 years old and a secretary at the drafting offices at Harland & Wolff when Titanic was being built. During her tenure, she was privy to many of the day-to-day workings of the Olympic Class liners and acquired some stellar original snapshot photographs of the people and places important in Titanic's construction and launch. This lot was acquired via descent by Ms. Irwin's daughter, who recently passed away.
R.M.S. TITANIC: A SUPERLATIVE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE HARLAND & WOLFF DRAWING ROOM.
A spectacular post-Titanic original photo of the Harland and Wolff drawing room where Titanic was designed, photographed by someone who worked there. This photograph depicts work in progress in the drawing room with several well-dressed gentlemen in attendance and numerous rolled plans visible in the foreground.
We are aware of two images of this iconic room belonging to Irwin. The other, a remarkable image in which the renowned builder's master model of Olympic/Titanic is in attendance, was sold by Henry Aldridge & Son in April 2016.
This sepia-toned photograph measures approximately 1½ins. x 2ins. and possesses remarkable clarity. The lot is accompanied by a copy of a letter from Irwin's daughter, Charlotte Alexandra Nelson Cowie, attesting to Irwin's employment at Harland & Wolff during the time of Titanic's construction. The photograph is believed to date from that time period.
