Taxidermy: Rare Golden Cowrie Shell.
A highly sought and rare specimen. Of good colour and size. Collected off of Siargao Island in the Philippines by compressor divers at a depth of between 10 metres and 30 metres below sea level.
The Golden Cowrie is one of Nature’s true treasures. This rare species is only found in the tropical waters of the west-central to south-central Pacific.
The first specimens to reach Europe were brought back by Captain James Cook's second circumnavigation of the globe in 1775 and since then the shell has been highly treasured by collectors. In 1825 one sold for the equivalent of £2,000.
